North Atlanta to Cherokee, NC

The wife and I are attending a wedding today in Cartersville, Ga, about 1 hour north of Atlanta. I am thinking about taking a trip to the Smoky Mountains before we head back to Florida. Instead of camping in Pigeon Fore or Gatlinburg, I was thinking of maybe base camping out of Cherokee, NC instead. Have any of you made that trip from Atlanta area to Cherokee. It looks like its all 2 lane roads. I may be better staying on I-75 all the way to Knoxville, and then going on in to Pigeon Forge. I just fear the crowds there in Pigeon Forge. Opinions? Thanks.

Hi,

From Cartersville, Ga I would take Rt 76, 515 North to Rt 60W ( it will be a left North of off rt 76) and at stop sign make left on Spur 60 into Rt 64,74 North. Follow rt 74, 19 through Murphy, Nanthahala Gorge and continue on Rt 74 to Rt 19 North to Cherokee, NC.

There are Campgrounds in Cherokee, NC.
