North Atlanta to Cherokee, NC

The wife and I are attending a wedding today in Cartersville, Ga, about 1 hour north of Atlanta. I am thinking about taking a trip to the Smoky Mountains before we head back to Florida. Instead of camping in Pigeon Fore or Gatlinburg, I was thinking of maybe base camping out of Cherokee, NC instead. Have any of you made that trip from Atlanta area to Cherokee? It looks like its all 2 lane roads. I may be better staying on I-75 all the way to Knoxville, and then going on in to Pigeon Forge from there. I just fear the crowds there in Pigeon Forge. Opinions? Thanks.

I would look at taking I-85 north to I-26 west. Check that route if you don't want all two lane roads.
