North Georgia roads
We’re planning on attending the Georgia Mountain Eggfest in Hiawassee, GA in May of this year. We will be traveling from the Chattanooga area in a 38 foot motorhome. I’m wondering if Hwy 64 is the best way to get there or would down through Chattsworth, GA via Hwy 76 be better. 76 is a little longer but it looks less challenging, at least on Google Earth and Delorme Street Atlas. If anyone is familiar with either of these highways I would appreciate some advice.
For those wondering what an Eggfest is, “an Eggfest is a gathering of Big Green Egg fans and experienced cooks from all across the country and Canada. The cooks will be showcasing their skills and talents and will be preparing their specialty recipes all day long. The non-cooks (tasters) are free to stroll through the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds, sample and experience wonderful egged food while talking to the cooks about their recipes and techniques. There will be some amazing food coming off the eggs all day long, so pace yourself! You'll soon learn why the Big Green Egg is the "Ultimate Cooking Experience". That was copied from their web site.

I have traveled HWY 64 through TENN and NC many times in a 40 ft motorhome towing a Jeep with no problems. Many parts of the highway are 4 lane and other parts have safe passing areas for those behind. It is a very scenic drive.

Thanks, Jim. That's the way I will be going. I guess it just looks worse on a map than it really is.

David, I need to clarify my comments on HWY 64 in NC. Do not use Hwy 64 between Franklin, NC and Highlands, NC as it is a narrow 2 lane road following a river on one side and mountains on the other with many tight curves. There are highway signs warning truckers and long rv's to not use. This was not part of your route and I did not think of it when I responded to your inquiry. For others using Hwy 64 in NC , please beware.

Hi dsurette - we live in NE GA - Young Harris which is in Towns Co - where you will be coming for your Eggfest.
When we are traveling in our mh north to Indiana to visit family we take 76 over to Ellijay up to Chatsworth on to Dalton & then we hit I-75. This road is a bit longer than NC64 & TN74. We won't take our mh on those roads that lead over to Cleveland TN. Locally, the road in TN is referred to as Ocoee River Rd. Beautiful scenery. And the large trucks travel it, but DH does not want to take the mh that way so we go GA76. I don't think it's much farther than the other road.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, Jim. We will not be going into NC on this trip but I'll keep your advice in mind if we ever do.
3catstravel, we travel with three cats also. One will occasionally have motion sickness problems but only on the first day on the road. For the rest of the trip he is fine. We wouldn't think of traveling without them.
