North through Los Angeles I5 or I405

We're headed north from San Diego to Castaic on Saturday. Wondering the best choice of roads. I5 roadway last year was in terrible condition. Is I405 a better choice eg. smoother ride?

A better choice, but slightly longer, would be I-5 to CA 57 to CA 210 west to I-5 and on to Castaic. Be careful to stay on the 210 in Pasadena as it easy to get swept off on the CA 134 west. If that happens, no problem, stay on 134 west to I-5 and then north to Castaic.

From San Diego I'd probably take I-15 and then pick up 210.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Made the trip today via 15 -> 91 -> 71 -> 57 -> 210 -> 5

Mostly good roads & easy traffic. Much better than straight through on 5.
