NYC to New England

A couple of years ago I traveled from Liberty Marina and RV park to new England and encountered some of the roughest roads possible. I will be making the same trip this April and am looking for suggestions for a smoother route out of NYC, not to mention that last time I crossed the GW bridge and had to pay an outrageous toll.

Where in New England are you headed in general, that might help.

For starters, I'd avoid the Taconic State Parkway. It's skinny, has concrete curbs and a million deer! Oh, and I think it's been rated as very dangerous now, too!

Stay in Jersey up to either the Tappan Zee bridge or Beacon Newbury bridge.

From there you can find your way to your destination, with some money and shock absorbers left.

Garden State parkway is ok for MHs, not the Taconic or Bronx River.

Wow. When you said New England, you meant it! That's up there! (Says someone who lives in NE, about 2 miles from NY... LOL)

Did you use any of the interstates the previous trip? They are usually pretty good in NE. Looks like a pretty straight show almost all the way there, if you don't mind driving on them.

Unfortunately, I'm on the left side of NE, so not familiar with roads on that end as much.

FYI for ALL RV'ers, do not drive on ANY roads in New York labeled a PARKWAY. These highways are designed for cars only and can have clearances as low as 10'.

I travel through that area often for work, twice with our coach. Here is how I go;

I-287 N to I-87N to I-84E to I-90E to I-495N to I-95N. If you look at it on Google maps you will see a few other interstates that might shave a few minutes off but this is a decent nice ride until I-495 in MA, that can get a bit crowded depending on the time of day, I would time it so you are not traveling through during rush hour.
I-287 you can pick up in Jersey City near the CG you are departing.

Thanks for all of the information. I did not want to repeat my past mistake.
We are headed to Bar Harbor to work as workampers. Looking forward to the experience.

As a local who also works in the region this is hands down the preferred route in any vehicle.

bill06447, what would you suggest from say the junction of I-287 and I-78 down to vicinity of Carneys Point Township?

D Lindy I haven't been through there since the reconstruction project began; maybe a local can chime in with preferred routes and timing?

Just a correction - I-278, NOT 287 goes through Jersey City.

As a longtime Jersey boy, I would take I-78W to the Garden State Parkway to I-87 in NY which is the Thruway. In order to bypass the crappy roads in CT, we take the Thruway all the way up to almost Albany and then cut over on I-90 (Mass Turnpike) to then hop back on 290 to 495 to 95. A little more distance but better roads and less city traffic.

Yes you will pay tolls on the GSP, Thruway and Mass Turnpike but the road is much better than the free I-95 through CT. If you get an EZ Pass, your trip will be smoother too.

+1

Only change I would make to this would be in Connecticut getting on to I-691E to I-91N then back to I-84E. this avoids going through Hartford on I-84. But not a big deal.

And for those that hevn't been on the Mass Pike (I-90) lately, there are no longer any toll booths. If you don't have an EZ-Pass then they do toll by plate now.
