My DeLorme Mapping Program gives this as the most direct route. It all depends what you want to see on the way to the canyon. There are many good ways to go.

This is 2100 miles:

I-10 to I-49 at Lafayette, Louisiana; I-20 at Shreveport
East of Dallas, pick up US80 at Forney, TX to I-635 around and north of Dallas
to I-35 toward Lewisville, TX
at Denton, take US380 west to Decatur, TX
Then US81/US287 from Decatur and continue on US287 thru Wichita Falls into Amarillo
Pick up I-40 West to Flagstaff, AZ and take US180 to the Grand Canyon

The best place to stay is in the park itself at Trailer Village which is close to the Rim. You'll be able to pick up the free shuttle right at the campground and you can ride all day long getting on and off wherever.

Have a good trip!

We drove Florida to Albuquerque a month ago.

I recommend you get to I-20 and stay on it until you get just of west of Sweetwater, TX, US-84 to Lubbock, TX, continuing on 84 until you get to Santa Rosa, NM. At Santa Rosa, merge on to I-40. I-20 skirts the south side of the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. Relatively easy to navigate and certainly easier than getting yourself to the north side of the Dallas metro area.

The roads are in pretty good condition with the exception being the Shreveport, LA area, particularly the bridge transitions through Shreveport. They, like many Louisiana roads have not been maintained and are rough.

In June we will be traveling from NW Florida to Amarillo, TX then on to Colorado Springs. What is the best route to get through/ around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area then to Amarillo? Also, from Amarillo to Colorado Springs. We have a 36' Jayco Senecca and a toad.
