Ocracoke Island on Memorial Day Weekend
We'll be in Florida next month picking up our first MH ever, and the timing means we'll be on the road (so our first MH road trip ever) over Memorial Day weekend.
I've always wanted to see the North Carolina Outer Banks, and except for the holiday timing this is a perfect opportunity. My question to those who have been there is whether the Memorial Day weekend is just very bad timing. Are the Outer Banks and Ocracoke Island popular holiday destinations for campers? Will there be long lines at the Ocracoke Island ferries? Will the Ocracoke Island campgrounds be packed?
If that is a bad time for the Outer Banks, then our next opportunity would be after Labor Day.

Its going to be packed. You might get a reservation at a private CG if you call today.

Agree that any tourist area will be busy on Memorial Day. What will the Outer Banks be like two weeks earlier?. We're planning to travel from South to North.

I believe there is only 2 commercial CGs on Ocracoke Is. The Beachcomber and Teeters. Teeters is where we had reservations but we considered it a dump and only had 30A service...not good in the heat. The Beachcomber is nothing to write home about, but the full hookups and 50A service is enough to loosely recommend. I'd call now for res.
The National Seashore CGs were all closed due to the Gov. shutdown, so really can't comment on those.
Anyway, I found this site:

Thanks, all, for the feedback. It looks like we'll pass on trying this over Memorial Day weekend, and come back another time.

We also stayed at camp hatteras in 1st week of sept, very quiet, weather was perfect. We rented a manx vw dune buggy, had a great time, took the ferry, which was busy, but not off the charts busy. Checked the weather forcast that morn,said,10% chance of an isolated shower, yea, you guessed it,drove back to hatteras in heavy rain,no roof, windshield wipers did
not work, cloth bucket seats, DW never stopped laughing, had a blast. Many shops on hatteras were closed for the season, but we chose sept for quiet time,no big deal for us.
