Ohio to South Dakota

We will be headed out to South Dakota in a couple of weeks. I have a choice of 2 routes. Northern route of 90 west...through Chicago. Or I can take 80 west to 380 to 35 to 90. I have never traveled that route. Drive time seems to be about the same. Does anyone have suggestions on either or? TIA!

If your not in a hurry you might try rt 30. I took it and missed all the tolls in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois.

I would stay on 80 until you hit 29 north. I35 north is in bad shape and will rattle your teeth in spots.

Stay on I-80W to LaSalle, then take I-39N to Rockford and back on to I-90. Way less tolls and way less stress.

I am allowing a little over 2 days for travel time. Its been along time since I have driven through Chicago. It wasn't fun back then and I'm sure it isn't any better now. I will check into the routes you all have provided. Thank you.

Is 39 a good road? 2 or 4 lane?

Last time we went through there, the stretch from Albert Lea south to 80 had the rattlers. That was 4 or 5 years ago.
