Congrats on the new rig!!

We did the complete Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica last May and were able to find and drive a lot of the old Route 66 in our 28' Tioga Class C. There were a few times we had to turn around as the road just abruptly ended.

You can usually take the "new" route 66 which is the highway for a few exits to get back on the old road. I would not hesitate to do it again in a smaller or little larger RV. So I would suggest go for it. The worst that can happen is you take the highway and just jump on and off when sightseeing.

Check out our blog where we posted daily our adventures. Along the Way with J & J

Good Luck and have fun!!

Having,

We started in Joliet, but only went as far as Albuquerque because we were going to the Balloon Fiesta.

WARNING about Joliet!!
STAY West of the river.
East of the river there railroad overpasses are low and tight. There were also some corners that we (23') had difficulty negotiating.

We drove on all the original Rt66 we could and accidentally some that we probably should have by-passed.

A lot of of the old route is clearly marked in Illinois. They seen to be proud of it. If you can find someplace to put the coach, stop at the Lincoln Library. Have a couple of hours to devote.

Buy the book EX-66. (ISBN 0-9708851-4-8). You will not regret it. Write your name on the fly leaf. The only problem is you have to remember who borrowed it and be sure and to ask for it to be returned.

We will do west of Albuquerque some day.

Matt

Was there a year ago. Bought the Route 66 T shirts, etc. Fun little touristy place off I-40. Even though they were getting ready for a car show, we still found parking for our 40' MoHo and toad. And while there we watched a 45' tour bus pull in so you know that section of the road is drivable in that area. There's also a Route 66 museum in nearby Kingman, AZ.
