Overnight on PA Turnpike?

Will be leaving tomorrow from SW Michigan heading to Washington D.C. We are expecting the possibility of freezing rain here in the early morning so might end up with a late start. Rather than push to drive all the way through, we plan to stop for the night somewhere along the way.

We prefer a campground, however many along the route are not open yet. Can anyone advise if it is allowable to overnight in one of the service plazas on the Pennsylvania Turnpike?

I drive a 2010, 3500 Mercedes Benz Sprinter towing a 17' Casita travel trailer, total length about 45'. Last June, I just hopped off the turnpike at a truck stop and slept in between a couple of tractor trailers. I believe it was a Pilot truck stop. I filled up and got something to eat. Of course, this is NO hook ups and, some truck "neighbors" can be noisy but, I've never had a problem overnighting at a truck stop. Will you be going through Ohio? Some rest areas in Ohio have actual RV parking areas with electric at each site and water + dump at a central location. Stopped at one two years ago and was charged about $20. Not all rest areas in OH are RV site equipped so, Google or stop at the first rest area to learn which areas do have RV sites. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply. Yes we will be heading through Ohio too. The forecast for tomorrow is rain, with the possibility of freezing rain in the early morning, so we might be getting a later start than preferred. We are hoping to get east of Pittsburg and leave a shorter run on Friday.

Advice: avoid the PA TP. You can buy a lot of fuel for the toll charge, and the TP is not in good shape.

I advise taking I80 to US 322 to US 15 or I83. Better roads. Less $

Thanks for the suggestion. I had actually plotted a route void of toll roads. Considered heading down into Ohio and picking up I-70 and heading east from there. Then dropping down into WVA and MD. Found that route to be almost 100 miles longer. So it kinda comes down to paying for fuel, or paying tolls. The toll roads are actually the most direct routes from here.

I-80 is parallel to the PA TP, but a lot straighter and smoother.

Trust an old PA resident on this one?

I agree completely. The PA turpike is good for one thing testing your RV. It tests your shocks, tires, and most human internal parts.

I completely agree about I-80, but we are headed to Washington D.C. I-80 is a long way north of the turnpike path. If we were heading to northern New Jersey or New York I-80 would be our preferred route.

Is that not true of every road in PA?

Pa turnpike has plenty of area between Ohio and where you will be getting off toe travel I70 that you can pull over for the night in addition to service plaza that yes you can park overnight in. The turnpike has improved greatly over the past several years but with that so has the price to travel it.

Thank you all for your replies. We made it as far as Bedford PA and stopped for the night here. Decided to stop at Friendship Village campground here. Found a reasonable site and settled for the night. Will be starting out shortly to complete the journey. We thought about the last service plaza, but it was filled to overloaded with trucks, so continued on to here. Need to head over to the office and get my bill paid as we arrived late.

BTW, we found the road to be not too bad so far. Certainly no worse than the toll road in Ohio. I think "testing shocks" could apply to the roads almost anywhere today. You'd think that after all these years, our engineers could find a way to build a road that would last!

Safe travels.

Compared to Michigan's roads any roads will seem to "be not too bad". Glad you got out of Michigan without the freezing rain. We will try to have warmer weather for you when you return.
