Phoenix to Durango - Hwy 89 to Hwy 160 Recommended?

Heading to Durango, CO later this week from Phoenix. Online maps suggest Hwy 89 to Hwy 160. Good route?

Thanks

Excellent route with many interesting places to stop before getting to Durango - about 10 miles north of Flagstaff on 89 is Sunset Crater Volcano Nat'l Monument - a nice half-loop drive taking you back to 89. A few feet before the entrance to Sunset Crater on the left in a lovely national forest campground called Bonito. It makes for a pleasant short stay.

Further north on 89, stop at Cameron Trading Post for a terrific Navajo Taco (& a full menu) and a top-quality gift shop - no trinkets.

Then you'll come to Monument Valley. Stay in Gouldings RV or at the Monument Valley Hotel area in a dry campgound right in front of the famous 'Mittens'.

Next is Mesa Verde National Parks. Take a ranger-led tour of the ruins for the best experience. The park has a campground - mostly dry camping with approx. a dozen electric sites.

Be sure to drive up to Silverton during your Durango stay. It won't believe the beauty. Your truck would be suitable to drive to the Eureka Ghost Town - good gravel road. Ask at the helpful Visitor Center when you enter town.

We've spent many seasons in Durango/Silverton. The 4-wheeling is tops.

Have a good trip!
