phoenix to flagstaff - advice
How hard a climb is it up to Flagstaff from Phoenix? Towing 2800lb car behind my tough 1998 Chieftain V10 Ford?

We made that trip with a 31' class C with the V-10 towing a car and never thought anything about it.

We have made it several times in our 95 with a 350 Chevy, although not towing, it still weighs just under 12,000 lbs. Just take your time, don't push it too much, and remember to go slow Down hill too !! Camp Verde is the Hill From Heck, (not exactly what I call it), don't get those brakes hot !! Down shift and let the engine help hold you back. I think it is a 6 mile 6% grade....

My Mountain Directory West shows no grades steeper than 6%. Piece of cake for your rig. Just be careful not to heat up your brakes on the declines. You might want to get this publication. A lot of here have it and find it to be quite useful.

I dreaded the Eisenhower tunnel ( 12,000' ) my first year Rving. I started up and before I knew it there was a sign that said Eisenhower tunnel 1/4 mile ahead. All that dread for naught.

If you route the trip on google.earth.com and then right click the trip, select "view elevation profile" and a graph will display all elevation and grade statistics for the entire trip and where. Max slope +7 to -9.7 Max elevation 7,003 ft

We've taken it many times although we're in a different rig. I'm sure you'll heed the hot brakes warnings but, on the way up, there are a number of downgrades with a lot of forward visibility where you might want to "let 'er run" as they say to get a good start on the next climb.
Drive the temp gauge this time of year.

Consiering the tempeture difference between Phoenix and Flagstaff, any hills will make no difference. You will be cooler up in Flag.

Thanks Rick. Yes, I have to get out of the heat.. Heading back to Indiana from the LA area. Plan to be in the seat by 6am to travel from Phoenix through Flagstaff and east on I-40.. I hope to be out of the 100 degree plus weather by noon!

For sure, had it both ways in Feb. I had much rather go from P to F rather than F to P. You should make it fine. Pretty country around Flagstaff.
