Planning trip from IN to CA September to November

Hello!

I am currently planning our next major trip...we are going to central CA to visit family and leaving Indiana about September 1st. The route I am planning is through IL, visiting Springfield; stopping by some interesting things in Iowa; then going through South Dakota (Mt Rushmore and all of the surrounding area); Wyoming (Devils Tower, Cody, Yellowstone, Jackson, etc); Utah (lots); then across 50 in Nevada and on to CA.

From September to mid November, do I need to make reservations in any of these places? I like to plan our trips without reservations and have flexibility in case of weather or emergencies, plus to stay longer in a place if we really like it.

Plus, is the weather okay this time of year in these states?

No, you don't need reservations. We didn't even use them in summer with our 40' motorhome.

I'd recommend being out of Yellowstone by mid October and start heading south. Southern Utah has some awesome national parks - Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands. October is a perfect time to visit them.

Have a great trip!

I think you only need reservations for "holidays" in heavy touristy regions ... Labor Day, Leaf Peeper weekends, Halloween, etc.

RV parks start to close down in the northern states about the end of October ... so check that they are open ... for example my favorite RV park in Cheyenne, WY closes down at Halloween or the first week in November.

You should also be aware of elevation of the places where you will be visiting. Zion and Bryce are relatively close to each other but the elevation is much different ... one year we left Zion and it was nice (short sleeves) and we drove to Bryce and there was a blizzard going on ... the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is much higher than the south rim so it closes for the winter ... Flagstaff is 7000 feet you can have snow there anytime from October to May ...

We went from Phoenix to Flagstaff at the beginning of May and there was a 65 degree difference...actually had to worry about lines freezing! I'll check weather as we go along.
