Planning Trip through the Northwest
Wondering if a week in Cody, Wyoming is a good idea. Seems a little far for day trips to either Yellowstone or Grand Teton. Is Cody worth staying a week. DW isn't real big on Rodeos.

Cody is definitely worth a few days, not a week to us. There's a wild horse area, the Buffalo Bill Center and a lot more. We find staying in West Yellowstone (Grizzly RV) works best for us to do Yellowstone. You can also stay near the Tetons, but to use one base makes for too much travelling.

To us, Cody is too far to tour Yellowstone & the Tetons. Some folks do it but we prefer to stay in the national parks, if possible. It saves so much driving and you'll be much more relaxed. The Cody Museum is well worth a half-day but other than that we weren't impressed with Cody. If you have kids along there's fun things for them but we just don't like the touristy things. We enjoy nature.

We spent several days at the state park at the head of Buffalo Bill lake. It's right on the road to Yellowstone. Two parks on the lake. The one by the damn has no facilities but the park at the head of the lake has elect and more level spaces.
Nice lake and park. Not that far to Yellowstone. I wish we had stayed longer at the SP, 10 miles out of Cody, and driven to Yellowstone a few days. A week would have been about right.
I wasn't impressed at all with the facilitys at Yellowstone while enjoying the sights of the geysers.

Buffalo Bill State Park is a great place to stay. There are 2 campgrounds. One is closer to Cody and right on the lake the other is where the Shoshone runs into the lake and is farther from Cody.
The Beartooth Hwy is a MUST do (if you have a toad). We enjoyed our day trip along the Beartooth to Chief Joseph scenic byway more than our stay in Yellowstone. The Beartooth is considered one of the most if not the most scenic road in the US and you won't be disappointed. Red Lodge, MT is a cute little town and you'll pass by it if you do the Beartooth.
We did stay in Yellowstone at Fishing Bridge. It was fine for what it was. There was no fire pits nor picnic tables and the sites were tight but who sits in camp all day when in a national park? We left in the morning & got back in time for supper then did it again the next day.

We spent a week at Cody this summer then another week at the Grand Tetons NP. While in Cody we made the northern loop through Yellowstone including Manmouth Hot Springs. A must do is the Beartooth Scenic Hwy to Red Lodge, Mt. Nice day trip on America's most beautiful hwy. Museum of the West is at least a day. While at Grand Teton NP we did the south loop through Yellowstone as well as Jackson. Floated rivers in both places.

michguy, I don't know your route to NW or back home, but if you decide to do Glacier NP, U.S. 2, Stay a day in Havre, MT. The underground city/Havre underground is quite interesting. There is a lot to see along U.S. 2 in MT, ND WI, MN and of course the UP.

To us, Cody is "back East", a good 3 days away.
