Planning trip to North Carolina
My wife and I are planning on taking a trip from central Kansas to Wake Forest Nc. We are wanting to stop in Cincinnati Oh then down to Williamstown, KY to see Noah’s Ark. At the moment the plans are to take I-70 to Saint Louis Mo. From there we are looking at taking highway 50 to Cincinnati Oh. Then I-75 down to Williamstown. From there into Wake Forest not sure which route to take. I have not drove past Kansas city so I’m not sure on what will be the best route. This will be the first time for this long of a trip with a with a truck and camper. We did take a trip of about 550 miles awhile back to get some experience with the truck and 5th wheel. Don’t have experience traveling through the mountains yet so looking for the best routes for us. Also what would some of you recommend for camp grounds on the way there and in the Cincinnati and Williamstown area.

Cincy is pretty much void of RV Parks. Just Off 70 about 25 miles outside of Cincy *in Indiana is a KOA that is a shared Thousand Trails park. Not too bad to get into town and easy to drop down into Kentucky from there.
Traffic in Cincy is terrible going South because everything filters to the river, so avoid rush hour on that leg in to Kentucky. I’d tell you to get to I-40 any way you can to get over to Wake Forest. I used to live not far from there and that would be the best highway from the west. Getting there is where I can’t help too much. I’m not sure where Williamstown is so I’ll say from the Cincy area you have a choice of going South towards Knoxville on 75 or find a way to head more east (maybe 64 out of Louisville?) then join 40 again. There is about a 35-40 mile section of I40 through the mountains that would put you east of them for the most part. It’s 2 lanes and trucks are restricted to the right lane for most of it. You have some passing zones and that’s the way we have gone a few times in our Class A towing a car. In Raleigh the route will likely take you off of I-40 to 540 towards Wake. Not sure if they made that full toll yet. (EzPass should work on it if they did)

South on 65 at Louisville then east on 71 to I 75 works nice.
You will also be close to the ( Creation Musium ) Creation science Dinosaur s
Boon county Kentucky.
We just came across 50 last night from I 65
Through Madison Indiana, a lovely drive now with fall follage colors along the river.
Check out Cliffty Falls state park, Madison Indiana.
50 is detoured on the west side of Madison south into Kentucky.
That works for you ok. Also.
Lots of Casino stops opportunities also.
This gives you two options to bypass
Cincinnati.

I just re-read this and see that I made a mistake and missed saying I-40 is 2 lanes IN EACH direction. The passing zones I referenced are straights where you would be able to make a pass and get back over (assuming that you don’t travel at about 80 like the cars do through there.)

The KOA mentioned earlier is in Batesville, IN just off of I74. We've stayed there on 2 different occasions - on one stay had a problem with the power pedestal, I think it had an open ground. We survived be using our 50 to 30AMP splitter and used both 30 Amp plugs in the pedestal. They even had a place where we could temporarily park the RV if we were still going to be in the area past check out time.
If you don't need to take the RV into Cincy, you can catch I275 south from I74 (or other route you take coming from the west). That will take you into Kentucky and to I71/I75. Then take I75 south to Williamstown. From there your best bet is to take I75 south to Knoxville, TN then east on I40.
There's also an RV Park in Kentucky south of Cincinnati off I-75 in Verona, KY - Oak Creek Campground. Haven't stayed there or know anything about it except it is a Good Sam Park.
Happy Travels.

I highly recommend Winton Woods Campground in Cinci. The header photo at the top of the pages is of there. Also see my photos of it: Winton Woods, OH 2017 - iRV2.com RV Photo Gallery
If you're a FMCA member, you can stay in their campground 2 nights for free & additional nights are just $20. They're doing construction there this month so it's doubtful you'll get a site anyway.
