Portland, Oregon to Anchorage, Alaska
Planning to head north to Anchorage a little after Memorial Day. Cassiar or Alcan? Which is in better shape? We have driven both multiple times so sightseeing would not be as important to us as condition of the roads. Thx.

Take the Alcan. The Cassiar will take less time, but it's two lane and rough most of the way even though most of it has been paved. Fuel stops are few and far between. We lived in Alaska for 20+ years and drove it to and from a few times with a horse trailer. Always on the Alcan. Tried the Cassiar last fall hauling a horse up with a friend. Never again. That being said, the farther north you get on the Alcan, it is also two lanes and the rougher the roads can be once you hit the Yukon. Slow down and take your time, especially between Whitehorse and the Alaska border. The last hundred miles to the border is the worst part and has serious frost heaves despite road construction to try and fix them. They will take out an axle. Most are marked with a red flag or sign, but not all. And be prepared for a LOT of road construction along the way. Summer is road construction season. Beware of wildlife, especially the bison and sheep in Northern BC and the Yukon. If it fits your schedule, stop at Laird Hot Springs. It is worth the short hike to take a soak after a long day on the road. If you want to enjoy a campfire, they deliver firewood to your campsite.
And, I can't emphasize this enough, mosquito repellant, mosquito repellant, mosquito repellant!

Thank you for your sage advice. Alcan it will be. Liard hot Springs was a delight last year on our way back to the lower 48. Hope to visit it again. BTW, I'm a mosquito magnet.

Last summer we took the Alcan up and the Cassier down. Yes the Cassier is somewhat narrower, but it didn't bother me. I think the area near Laird still has a big construction project going on this summer.

My dad and I are headed out from Bozeman to Anchorage on Wednesday.
I'm excited, but I haven't spent more than a weekend with him in over 15 years...it ought to be interesting .

We're up in Alberta tonight south of Calgary. It was slow going today, 35mph crosswind with 45-50mph gusts.
We made it about 400 miles before we called it a day. The forecast for the rest of the week is much more favorable.
It's pouring rain out but we are nice and warm in the trailer watching a movie and having some cocktails.

Portland, Oregon to Anchorage, Alaska
Days 2 and 3 have been much smoother. The weather has been in the 70s with calm winds, minimal construction, and very little traffic.
We went to Grand Prairie on day 2 and Fort Nelson today. Tomorrow we are off to Watson Lake.
Below are a few pictures that I took today. And before anyone says anything...the wildlife picture was taken with a telephoto lens from a safe distance.
I've also been impressed with how well my AT&T iPhone and jetpack have worked, and the strong LTE coverage that I've had so far. The last 1/2 of the trip to Fort Nelson had some long stretches with no service however, and I expect these gaps to be more widespread in the coming days.

We'll be passing through Edmonton on our way up the AK Highway on June 9. Anyone else going up about that time?

I am enjoying the thread. Are you capturing some of these photos with a camera on a drone quad copter?
