At this time, I'd have to say that I don't have a preferred travel guide for Route 66. When I was planning our stops along Route 66 for a 2017 trip, I borrowed every travel guide our regional library system had. All of them were useful and covered the highlights, but they varied in format and in the depth they went into regarding certain topics.
That being said, having just finished reading a Moon travel guide on coastal Oregon, I ordered the Moon Route 66 Road Trip travel guide. I was impressed by the sheer volume of detailed information in the Oregon guide, and I'm hoping for the same quality of detail in their Route 66 guide. Unfortunately, it's still in transit so I can't comment on it.
I'll bet that other forum members will be of more help. But you could also go online to read book reviews that might help you make the best choice for your needs.
Good luck with your search, and have a wonderful adventure on Historic Route 66!
