Preliminary Itinerary Help Please

Hello Friends:

We are in the preliminary planning phases of our first big trip. We have been out on a couple of "local" shake-down runs to make sure all systems are GO! Now is the time for the real thing!

We will be in our '92 33' Pace Arrow towing our '95 Jeep Wrangler. All mechanical systems have been inspected, tweaked, tuned and are ready to go. We will be leaving central Iowa on Saturday, September 2 and heading north and west. We have to be at our reserved spot at the Grant Village campground on Tuesday, September 5th and staying until the morning of the 9th. We are planning on migrating up to I-90 from central Iowa, and making an intermediate stop in the Badlands/Rapid City area for a day of sightseeing, then on to Cody and the East entrance to the park.

After that we will head south to GTNP for another day (or so, depending.....no reservations yet) and then further south to Durango, CO for a few days. We LOVE Durango and southwest Colorado and have been there a few times, but always on a motorcycle. We want to do some white water rafting again in Durango and then again at Royal Gorge. We joined the "Arkansas River Swim Team" the last time! Then, heading back north and east for home.

DW is a truck drive (38 years!) and has no fear of driving big things and no fear of most places other than a few mountain passes she has told me about. Like the one between Cheyenne and Laramie on I-80, and another one in Washington State, I think it was. I used to race Formula Vee in a previous life and don't have much fear of driving things either. Naively or otherwise, our confidence levels are high,

Total trip will be 2 weeks and am looking for route suggestions, stop ideas, and campground recommendations on our route. At this point, we have an outline of our trip, but only have made a few reservations, so we can be quite flexible.

We would like to tap into you experiences for some help. Thanks in advance for sharing!

First thing - You both may be able to drive but................to do this trip you will need more TIME.

You have overloaded you PLATE.

First think - What is the Mission????????????

What do you want to do?

Where do you want to be???????????????

Possible to Leave Friday after work? This will pick up 1/2 day, do we have three weekends or just 2? three will add 2 more days = 17 if we leave on Friday this will be big - you add three days + 20 per cent more time.

Is YNP and GTNP a drive through - it takes 4 days to just drive through - Hike - see all the Sites - Cody ? - anything outside? Wind River Caynon - Beartooth - Chief Joseph? lots to see and do in the area.

GTNP - same - Lake Hikes just sit with a Cold one and Stare.

Jackson?

Flaming Gorge?

Dinosaur NM?

I could go on and on but I think we need the MISSION?

Let us Know we'll all pitch in.

Best of Luck,

Clarification

Hey, Skip:

Maybe this will help:

Day 1 Saturday: Leave and make it to Rapid City area(~600 miles)
Day 2 Sunday: Rapid City/Badlands via Jeep
Day 3 Monday: On to Cody (~390 miles)
Day 4 Tuesday: Cody to YNP Grant Village campground
Day 5 Wednesday: YNP
Day 6 Thursday: YNP
Day 7 Friday: YNP
Day 8 Saturday: Break camp and head to GTNP
Day 9 Sunday: GTNP/Jackson
Day 10 Monday: GTNP to Grand Junction, Colorado
Day 11 Tuesday: Grand Junction to Durango
Day 12 Wednesday: Durango
Day 13 Thursday: Durango to Royal Gorge
Day 14 Friday: Royal Gorge and east (boondocking)
Day 15 Saturday: Home (~600miles)
Day 16 Sunday: Ahhhhh...

First 3 days average 350miles per day
Next 3 days at YNP
Next 2.5 days is what? 100 miles?
Next 5 days will average about 200 miles per day plus stops

I haven't allowed for other stops at this point, but we are very flexible.

I have to agree with Busskipper. Your vacation seems like a truck driver who is getting paid to drive. Take an additional week off or throttle back the places. Remember, unless you are on interstate, you won't average 60 miles per hour. 200 miles could take you 4-5 hours.

My 2˘ is to spend a couple hours at Great Sand Dunes NP after Durango. We stopped there last year (on the way to Durango).....well worth the sidetracking

NOT ENOUGH TIME ... or perhaps TOO MANY PLACES

You can make a tick mark that you have been there ... but I don't think you will be able to say that you have done that ...

This sounds like you will get out of your Jeep take a picture ... get back in the Jeep and drive on ... then look at the pictures when you get back to Iowa
