Provo, UT - Hwy 189 to I80?

We're at the Elk's Lodge in Provo, heading towards Rawlins, WY in the AM. Would like to avoid the I15 - I215 Salt Lake City AM traffic.

Anyone have any input on Hwy 189 thru what looks to be called Provo Canyon? It cuts in after 36 miles to I80.

We're in a 40' with Toad.

TIA, and best to all,
Smitty

Welcome to Utah! Provo Canyon is beautiful, a bit narrow and twistyand uphill in your direction, but WAY BETTER than I15/I215 any time of day and especially during rush hour. There might be a bit of traffic, but I'd do Provo Canyon in a minute if I were there and heading to Wyo.

I80 across Wyo gets very breezy so pay attention to the signs. If it says no high profile vehicles, I'd wait in Rawlins, especially not travel near near Elk Mountain, about mm 250ish. It is not unusual to see rv and semis blown over or blown off the road along the mid eastern stretches of Wyo I80. Morning is better for calm winds than late afternoon. I traveled that road every week for over a decade, slc to Cheyenne. Ugh.....

Tony - Perfect info, and many thanks! The DW is happy to hear we routed the right course!

We'll watch the weather closely as we leave Rawlins towards North Platte on Saturday AM... Should be thru Elk's area by mid morning.

Really appreciate your quick response.

On a side note. WOW! Sitting in the sun still at just after 6:00PM, 71 outside, and surrounded by snow covered mountains and high billing clouds - a post card afternoon. Provo!

Best,
Smitty

Just made that trip 2 weeks ago. Hope you enjoyed Provo Canyon. Be careful between Laramie and Cheyenne. Wind, Fog, Rain and Snow it was the toughest drive I've encountered in my RV.

It really was a great drive, so glad we took it...

And we've been watching the weather closely, and are sliding behind one storm - and a day or two in front of the next. Expect it will catch us in St Joseph, MO... But, that will be OK!

Best to all,
Smitty

...here's another recommending the drive through Provo Canyon. It's very doable.
