Rapid City to Cheyenne

We will be traveling from Rapid City, SD to Cheyenne, Wy this summer. We have 40' MH with a toad.

Would like your advice regarding the best routes and the routes to avoid.

Thanks for your time and your information.

US 16 S to Hill City, then US 385/16 S to Custer. US 16 will continue W, but stay on US 385/SD 89 to Pringle where US 385 will split off. Stay on SD 89 until the US 18 junction. Continue on US 18 until it joints US 85 at Mule Creek Junction. Continue on US 18/85 until in joins US 20 in Lusk, WY. Follow US 18/20 until near Manville where you turn left onto WY 270. It will end at US 26, take it W until I-25, south to Cheyenne. About 4 3/4 hours, just under 300 miles. It's the most direct and easy route between the two points.

Around Mt. Rushmore there are a few roads you don't want to take, US 16 A most notoriously. It's a beautiful drive, but not for anything larger than a pick up truck. Same for Needles Highway, SD 87. It's beautiful, great scenery, but only for cars and pick ups.

faster & easier

From the eastern edge of Rapid City go south on SD 79 (four lanes highway speed) until near Hot Springs

Then West on US 18 into Wyoming (2 lanes ... wide shoulders)

Then South on US 18 to Lusk

Then West on US 18 to I-25 at Orin

South on I-25 to Cheyenne

I have travelled this route in a 40 ft towing (in the opposite direction) more than once ...

I am assuming that you have seen the sights of the Black Hills and you are interested in moving your motorhome from Rapid City to Cheyenne the easiest way possible

What skigramp said - we did it a couple years ago and the only issue was the wind in a few places.

We just did this drive today- easy and smooth. Went from Ellsworth AFB to Casper in just over 4 hours. Thanks for posting the info!

We did it the way skigramp suggested a couple of years ago and it was all good road then (don't know about now). We did experience some high wind gust heading south thru WY.
