Rapid City to Phoenix?

Hi, brand new here and I was hoping to get some travel advice. We want to work our way south from the Rapid City, SD area and winter around Phoenix. We are not looking for the most scenic route, just the easiest and most direct.
Since we are new full timers with little experience in the mountains, we were trying to find the easiest way to get south to Arizona from here. We started out from Michigan pulling a 37ft Montana with four slides so it is quite a load.
We have just upgraded our truck from a 1998 3/4 ton Silverado to a 2005 Ford 3500 because we did not enjoy the struggles up the grades with the Chevy. So I will save the more scenic routes for next year after I have had more time to get used to the new truck and how it handles the grades.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like your new truck is a bit more capable of handling that fiver and should be a lot more fun to drive.

I live near Phoenix and have made the drive you're planning but DW is the navigator so I'll leave the directions to others.

Best of luck.

Rick

I think you better stay put in South Dakota for awhile ... there is massive flooding along the front range of Colorado ... I-25 in the Fort Collins / Loveland area is under water and closed ...

check CO DOT website before starting toward Phoenix

Hi,
We are planning a trip along this same route (Denver / AZ ) with a 40 Holiday Rambler. What is the best route?

Thank you, I was wondering how the flooding had affected the major highways along that route. Maybe we will cross the Rockies on I-80 and then get south from there. Update: we will take 83 south until we pick up I-40. =)

Thank you! I appreciate the help. I was looking at that but was not sure if I wanted to try it. =)

I would take 40 from Tucumcari to Albuquerque. Go south on 25 and take 10 west to Phoenix.
