First, welcome to the forum,
We went to Yellowstone last year and took freeway almost all the way to Yellowstone!
We took 90 to Boseman and the 191, drops you right at the west entrance. There are a few RV parks to choose from on the west entrance

From Rapid City be sure and make a quick stop at Devils Tower. Just a short drive out of the way. Then we stayed on I-90 staying in Buffalo and then on up to the Little Big Horn Battlefield. We then followed the interstate through Billings then headed down the Yellowstone River to Cody, on 120. An easy drive compared to the routes through the Bighorn Mountains. Cody is a great destination in itself. Be sure and spend a couple of days at the Buffalo Bill Museum of the West. Then you can take the east entrance to Yellowstone, traveling though (One of the best drives by Yellowstone Lake) to stay in West Yellowstone as your base for sightseeing in the Park. We did this two years ago.

Question for you about this route? How is the highway? More specifically how steep both going up and down? I've never pulled in the mountains so I'm curious. We will be stopping in Livingston, MT. Thanks in advance for your insight.

From Boseman up to the park you have a pretty steady climb. There are a few spots that are steep! I had no issues on my W22 pulling a Tahoe.
Think of it as driving through the Alps!!

Here's a great article of the roads leading into Yellowstone and in Yellowstone itself.
We've taken 89 off I-90 at Livingston, MT to Gardiner and into the park.
We've taken 191 off I-90 at Bozeman, MT to the W. Yellowstone area.
We've come in from the south through Jackson and Grand Teton Nat'l Park.
We've come in from the east from Cody.
It just depends where you are staying for touring Yellowstone. We didn't have any problem with any of the above routes with our 40' motorhome.
Coming from Iowa you could come in from the south through Grand Teton Nat'l Park and north into Yellowstone. When leaving Yellowstone you could then do your Rapid City thing and return home a different route. Many choices.
We usually stay in the park itself or at Baker's Hole national forest campground outside of W. Yellowstone or Henry's Lake State Park outside of W. Yellowstone. We've also stayed at a forest service campground west of Cody toward the east entrance but that was too far of a drive to do Yellowstone. We've been to Yellowstone many, many times coming from all directions. We've stayed in Grand Teton Nat'l Park at Gros Ventre campground many times but that was only for touring Grand Teton. It's too far of a drive to tour both parks. You need to move.
Road to Yellowstone

depends
We did that trip from Iowa to Yellowstone this last summer.
It depends on where you are planning to be staying in/around Yellowstone.
We stayed at Fishing Bridge, thus coming from Custer SD, we stopped at Devil's Tower, overnighted in Billing Mt, then entered Yellowstone in the East entrance via Cody Wy.
Have fun!
Dean

If you are going on the 4th of July you'll need reservations.
If you go August 8 through Aug 14 you'll probably need reservations too because of the Sturgis motorcycle get together.

Where are you starting on 212?
There's a 13-mile segment out of Cheyenne, WY.
212 doesn't go all the way through Wyoming.
There's also 212 out of Yellowstone (Bear Tooth Pass) and you probably don't want to drive it with a RV. It's very steep and hairpin turns. Some folks do, though, depending on the size of the RV. Most would do it as a day trip with a smaller vehicle.
