Has anyone driven over Raton Pass in New Mexico on I-25? If so, can you tell me about it - how bad are the pulls, grades etc? Thanks!

GraciesMom,

On the South side there is about 3 miles of 5-6% grade and on the North side almost the same. There are truck lanes so you won't be in the way (or can pass the semis that are going slowly).

We've driven it northbound twice and it is not all that difficult a climb - you just take your time and do not rush things.

The important thing is to be in a lower gear as you start down from the summit. Rule of thumb - going down, use the lowest gear you used going up. To control speed, use a 3 second stab on the brake now and again as needed.

You should do just fine.

you didn't ask about this but, at the top of the pass on the east side is a very nice, small rv park, great view including elk last time i was there.
