Will be traveling from Richmond, VA to Camp Hatteras on the OBX on a Sunday in mid May. Haven't traveled in that area for years.
Looks like two possibilities....I-64 E thru Hampton Roads, stay on beltway (I-64) to intersection with 168. Or, I-64 E to Newport News then take 664 (Portsmouth Tunnel?) and down to 168. Is one route better than the other?

One's about like the other...just make sure you miss the morning and early evening traffic. It can stack up for a ways around the tunnels. Make sure lp is off and stop at the inspection stations. They normally just walk up to window and ask if your tanks are off, not having you get out and show them...Happy Trails..

Take I64 east until you see I664 (Monitor Merrimac Tunnel). I664 picks up just before the Hampton Coliseum. Follow I664 through the tunnel and simply follow the signs for Nags Head. DO NOT go through the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel or the Portsmouth tunnels.
There will be a $2 toll (two axles) on the turnpike (Great Bridge Bypass) that connects from the interstate to 168 and points south to the OBX. This is the fastest way with the least headaches.

I am not sure why you say not to use the Hampton Roads Bridege Tunnel (I-64). We went that way leaving Urbanna in late 09', stopped at the inspection station and turned the LP off there. We did detour north for a few days, but came back down over the CBBT and picked up I-64 again to 168. I believe we paid $4 on the turnpike, 4 axles.
With fuel going up, I prefer to go through rather than around. But not during rush hour.

There is nothing wrong with the Hampton Tunnel and very little difference in travel time. The thing to do is listen to the local radio stations and find out which ones are stacking up. The least little thing with back traffic up for miles....enjoy the Banks and Happy Trails...

Thanks for the suggestions. We will be traveling on a Sunday morning so would not think there would be back-ups.
