Road to Palo Duro
I have 42' dynasty with tag, friends got us going to palo duro canyon in north Texas next month. I have heard stories on getting down to the campgrounds with big rigs Has anyone done this and had any issues. They show it has sites up to 60' so it must work.
I guess I will disconnect the truck and goldwing and have her drive it in.

It is doable, BUT, the downgrade into the canyon is about 10%, and roads are narrow. Begin the descent very slowly and keep it slow.
I towed our 40' 5er down there, and would never do so again. There is a FHU RV park in the nearby town that we stayed in next visit.

We have done it with our 25' TREK. It is steep and windy. However, if there is a chance of rain, I won't camp in my RV at the bottom because of possible flash floods. It is a canyon and there is one way in and one way out. Just MYHO.

This is pictures of palo Duro and the flooding issue they have done a lot of work on that. Towing down hill take it slow and no problem. Mine is 33 footer and towing my toad and at night. 😳

We are going in May, and I heard stories about how steep it is.
Google does show a 10% grade, which is greater than anything I have tried. So please let us know how it goes!

We've done it with our 40' MH and would definitely do it again. It's a very short drive down. Just 'know' your rig and your skills and you'll do just fine. It's a beautiful park.

It's a 600 foot drop to the bottom but it snakes down the side. It has a wide road and curves is also wide. You will do fine. If I can do it anyone can. 😁

I just took a look at the area on Google Earth..... and now I am not sure I want to try to get my 40 ft MH and toad into the canyon. We plan to visit the 2nd week of May, and had planned to stay a few days. I see a very stark RV park sitting just outside the entrance to the park.... and I mean stark. Has anyone stayed there before and know anything about the park?? Or any better ideas nearby?

Yes, many RVers have stayed there. It's a campground.  To stay there you need to drive down to the campground and we've done it. It's over fast. It's a short drive!

We went down with our 45ft plus toad this part spring. I stopped at the top of the road, put our Jake brake on high, shifted into 1st and started down. I did have to stands on the service brakes quite a bit but the road is not that long so no real chance of offer heating brakes.
Getting back up was not an issue at all.

This may be off topic but this group may know. We are planning on a visit in late July. Will we need reservations? I normally travel with the wind only making reservations the night before.

We've made the trek down and up the Palo Duro the slope in our 38' DP pulling a toad. Like a previous post I engaged the engine brake at the top and took it really slow. Several sharp "S" curves to deal with but very doable with caution. With a 40 footer or longer I would dis-connect the toad and take each down and up separately. You will be using the toad to tour the park anyway.
Just an FYI the road out to the park is really rough!

Sunday. At Caprock today and tomorrow. I will give my view of Palo Duro Tue, or the next time I have internet. Caprock is well worth the trip, warm and sunny today with a light breeze. The Buffalo are hiding, did see one cow and calf. the Prairie Dogs are in good supply! Nice camp ground and clean restrooms and showers.
