I make the trip from S TX to NE WA twice a year. The shortest friendly rout I have found is' McAllen to San Antonio to Albq or Gallup to Shiprock, to Moab, to Salt Lake, to Id Falls.

Stops things to see: Mesa Verde NP, Canyon Lands NP, Arches, NP

If you don't have a copy of MS Streets and Trips, I highly recommend it as a planning and mapping tool. The version with the GPS puck is great as a driving tool and GPS if you have a laptop.

Happy Trails

My method is probably a little old school, but I take a map of the USA and draw a straight line between my starting and ending spots. I then modify the route to follow the roads and see what is interesting along this route. I also figure how far I want to travel each day, break it down into inches and mark it with a cheap compass. In this way I can check my travel books for over nighting.

Maybe I do this because half the fun, to me, is the planning. Of course after all is said and done the DW changes the plans.
