Roads to avoid

Greetings,
We are planning a trip to New Orleans and then on to the Grand Canyon. Hard to tell from google maps but are there any roads we should avoid?our game plan is NJ to New Orleans to San Antonio to El Paso to Tucson to Grand Canyon.

Regards,
Joe

Check out the Natchez Trace Parkway for a great scenic and quiet drive from Nashville, TN to Natchez, MS. About 400 miles and it ends up very close to I-10. Probably out of your way though.

The intersection of I-10 & I-12 (west) in Baton Rouge can be a parking lot at certain times. and I suspect it gets worse as northern roads get less desirable in winter months.

The above is true.

I just drove from Wash DC to Tucson. Took I-81 not 95. And then 85 to I 10.

There are sections of 10 east and west of N.O. that are rough and with construction. Otherwise the roads are fine.

Avoid 95 whenever you can.

I40 through NM and AZ is in bad shape.

You DO NOT want to take I-95 through the Baltimore Tunnels. They are propane restricted and the fine is $ 500 when you get caught and they WILL catch you at the toll booths. Take the I-695 beltway around Baltimore instead.

Looks like you have the basics right. I10 west of N.O. is fair to good in LA but how are you gonna avoid it unless you resort to the Old U.S. highway system (some of which are darned nice and in better shape than the interstates). In Texas I recall it as quite good. Same for NM and AZ but expect construction anywhere on a road like I10 which has so much truck traffic.

Think you need to go all the way to Phoenix and take I17 up to Flagstaff (good road and beautiful scenery nearing Flagstaff). Might want to get off I17 and see Sedona. However, one is then tempted to go US 89 north out of Sedona to save time backtracking back to I17, but 89 is a tough hilly, narrow, curvy stretch of road. We did it in our 36' Bounder with a tow and it was pretty but not much fun.

Wish we were making that trip. Two of our favorite places.

When we went up this summer I10 to Phoenix I17 to Flagstaff to I40, transition from I10 to I17 in Phoenix was a mess due to construction, I17 to Flagstaff was good, but I swear if anyone catches me on I40 to Williams again, I hope they send me for a sanity check, it is worst stretch of road I have been on in a motorhome in the past 45+ years of rving.
We were planning to go further to the Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, etc, but a fellow camper told us the road did not get any better, so we came back to Kerrville, Texas..
We drive an American Tradition which is smooth and quiet, but still fixing squeaks and rattles.

They have been repaving I-40 from Flagstaff to Williams for the last two months.

OP: What roads are you concerned about? The interstates are all good to take. Also, when will you arrive at Grand Canyon. It gets winter weather - cold and snow. Check the local forecast before going there. Stay in the park itself at Trailer Village RV with full hookups.

As you approach Flagstaff from any direction in winter, it can be icy and dangerous since it is at 7,000-ft elevation. Watch the weather forecasts and drive carefully.

Just drove I10 through Louisiana and it is by far the worst road we have traveled in the U.S. Potholes, washboard, expansion joint jolts that almost shook the coach apart. Chuck
