Planning on taking easer 89 or 89A from Kanab Utah to just outside of Winslow Arizona.

Which one would be better route for someone that is absolutely terrified of heights and steep grades. I made it down to Beaver Utah so far what was not real happy with my lack of mountain experience. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I drove from, Panguitch UT to Flaggstaff 2 years ago I used 89 all the way and no problems at all.

Considered taking 89A with my motorhome until I drove it in the toad to Grand Canyon North from Kanab. 89A has a lot of curves and steep grades. I would take 89.

Enjoy driving over the Colorado river @ Page, teeny bit high.

Exactly how high is teeny bit high. Also, how long is the bridge?

If you take 89, coming out of Page near the jct of 89A you will have a 5-mile section of 6% downhill with a runaway truck ramp which exits to the right.

Taking 89A coming from Jacob Lake you'll have 10 miles of 5-6% downhill with 35 mph curves and switchbacks and long drop-offs.

We've done both multiple times with our 40' motorhome. Get into low gear before you begin descents; not in the midst of one.

By now in your trip you should be a pro!

Even if you just drive up toward Jacob Lake you can then do a flat drive the Grand Canyon North Rim for a looksee. Then retrace your drive to get back to Hwy 89 to Page if that's the one you want to do. You will also be close to viewing the South Rim on your way to Flagstaff. Take Hwy 64 west off 89 - a easy drive.

Generally SPEED is what will cause the FEAR - SLow down, Gear Down, Pull off and take a Few Pictures - the Drive is Beautiful.

You really need to get over your fear of heights and steep grades to enjoy the west. Is it what you are driving that is creating the problem or is it just you? If you can't deal with it I suggest getting east of the rocky mountains and staying in the flat lands.
