Route 55 St. Louis to Jackson, MS Info

We will be traveling in our RV coming from Des Moines, IA (enough said why we are going south) using this route in January and returning in March and looking for experience on this route. Actually going on to Gulf Shores, AL so if anyone can recommend routes from St. Louis they like/recommend would be greatly appreciated. Be well, travel safely, help others.

In years past we have travelled I-55 from Bloomington, IL to I-10 in early January.

There were RV parks open from St. Louis south. The RV park where we stayed in Springfield, IL has now closed.

We got caught in a winter storm in Jackson, MS one winter ... we have stayed in a State Park there (right along I-55), at a Corps of Engineers park (intersection of Fanning Road & Spillway Road), and an RV Park called Swinging Bridge (lots of long term folks when we were there)

We toured the State Capital and drove the Natchez trace to Natchez ... and visited the battlefield at Vicksburg (two years the weather was very nice and spring like ... one year there was a wet snow and we stayed multiple nights)

The only tight driving is through Memphis.

I hope this info is helpful

One other winter, a storm was approaching from the southwest so we turned SE at Bloomington, IN on I-74 to near Champaign/Urbana and went south on I-57 until it rejoined I-55 in Missouri.

This was probably 50 miles further but we avoided driving in snow. There is an RV park that stays open year around at Mahomet ... the name of the park is Tin Cup ... they have a few pull through sites with full service site there.

And I forgot to mention that in Sikeston (junction of I-55 and I-57) is Lambert's "home of the throwed rolls" ... the food is great, it is entertaining, and they have a staff to handle gigantic crowds ... don't miss it if you have never been to one of their restaurants ... I think they have 3

There is another RV park on this route. It is at Lady Luck casino that is right on the Mississippi river at Caruthersville, MO ... it is about 8 miles from I-57 ... it is open year around ... nice place

We've made this trip three times pulling a 38' Montana. We live in central Missouri and winter in Gulf Shores, Al. We stopped at the KOA in Marion Ar. the first night on two trips. (Not fancy but O.K. for overnight)
There is a nicer CG on the south side off Memphis in Southhaven, EZ Daze CG.
We now own a motorhome and will make the trip in about three weeks. We are headed to Destin, Fl. first for 10 days then on to LA. ([Lower Alabama).
I plan to stop the first night near Canton, Ms. at Movietown RV Park, then drive straight thorough to Destin the next day. We'll take I55 south in St. Louis. Then take Hwy 49 east out of Jackson, MS. to Hattiesburg. From there take Hwy 98 to Mobile. This cuts a little time off the drive vs going all the way to I10 in Louisiana.
We have taken HWY 78 out of Memphis down to Tupelo, Ms. then Hwy 45 south to Mobile, but I prefer the other more. There is very little in the way of service along this route.
We'll be in Gulf Shores until late March. Keep in touch.
What type of RV are you traveling with?

Buckeye,
Thanks for the great info. We are staying here until after Christmas with family and then head south. This is our first time going south and looking forward to it. We are staying at an Escapee park in Summerdale, AL for January and then moving to Gulf S.P. for February. Please let us know how your motorhome trip goes and any new recommendations.

We use microsoft streets and trips to plan our routes. It shows Quincy Il. Mark Twain cave/camp about 5 hrs away. Then Sikeston Mo. another 4/5 hours ride. Then Jackson, Ms. about 6 hours. Then Folley by noon. Easy ride. Looks like hwy163/63/ 61 to St. Louis, I 55 to sikeston/Jackson, then 49 south to 98. to I 10 bypass, to 59 south to Foley. Nice area you will love it 4 of our camping group are down there already. We stay home and "tough it out"...
