Between Flagstaff and Windslow there is the Meteor Crater ,where the astronaughts trained for moon flights. In Holbrook,Az there is the TeePee motel . Heading east bound on I-40 take the first exit into Holbrook and it will take you right by the place go down to the light and trun left and you can go up to the on ramp to I-40 . You will have driven about 4 miles on the old RT66. Hope this helps Joe

Another place to see Route 66 is in Gallup, NM. Has that same "lost" look. I found some really old (made in the 50's) Navaho and Suni jewelry in one of the local pawn shops there. I bought a really great horned-toad-turquoise bolo tie,it was in an old cardboard box full of them the owner dragged out of a cabinet.

Back from the trip. Some great sights and people along the route. A bit sad to see all these wonderful towns closing up - Tucumcari really shows the loss of travelers with so many large abandoned motels.
A few pics hopefully attached and again many thanks to all for their information and recommendations!

Sounds like you had a good trip, I recognize Seaba Station and the Round Barn in Arcadia, Ok. Agree about the loss of businesses in these small towns, my brother and I just returned from a 2400 mile motorcycle trip. We camped some but also stayed at motels mostly in small towns and ate at local eateries except for a couple of quick lunches at the franchises while on long days. I believe that we all have choices to make on who gets our business and we attempt to support small business in our travels when we can.

That is so sad about Tuccumcari. Its such a small town and sounds like more has closed down then ever. Glad you had such a great trip.

As much as I am able I support the local business in preference to the big box stores. It really does make a difference. We are such a young country and need to build and maintain our new history!
Thanks to all who are willing to spend a few pennies more to keep our heritage alive.
