We did most of Route 66 last winter. We picked it up in St. Louis, and went to California. We hit all the major areas along the way. We found most of the original hwy too bumpy. We used the main hwys, and stopped in at each are. I like the Arizona part the best. Oatman AZ was neat, as was the whole Grand Canyon area. It has the quite a bit of the old hwy still intact from Ash Fork, through pas Oatman. I watched a couple different Youtubers who did reports on almost all the aspects of the trip. Cheers Roaming Rich has many.

Also Justin Scared has many as well.

We drove to Las Vegas on I-40 in Fall of 2017. Some parts of US 66 are now I-40, some parts are just gravel/dirt access road parallel to I-40, some parts in AZ and NM are 2-lane highway. Between Williams, AZ and Peach Springs, AZ is the little town that was the basis for Radiator Springs in the original Cars movie. IIRC there was really low RR underpass near US66 in town of Gallup, NM that almost caused us a problem going from Walmart to our CG on the west side.
Most of the towns that got an exit or two from I-40 have a 4 lane stretch (like Santa Rosa, NM), towns with no exit, just died.

For starters, just buy the book:
EZ-66.
Ours is so old that I would probably buy a new one if we were going that way.
We had planned to and did turn around at Albuquerque and go home after the Balloon Fiesta (something to see), but we want to get to points west some year.

Oklahoma has a fair portion of 66 still open and is clearly marked. Several small town to pass through. Jim E. OKC

There are a bunch of videos on my youtube channel as well if you care to look at them. This one is of the pony bridge over the Canadian river in Oklahoma.
