Route 95 (128) Around Boston

Traveling down route 95 From northern Massachusetts I usually take route 495 and reconnect to 95 just north of Providence. Last trip this wasn't a great ride so wondering how route 95 is around Boston these days. I know the traffic won't be improved but wondering about the road conditions.

Route 95 (128) Around Boston

vette...... We're here in MA for the whole summer visiting family (lived here my whole life except the last 9 years). I travel a fair piece of 495 a few times a week, from the South near I-95 up to Rt 2, and there's no part of that that's bad road. Haven't been on the northern stretch for a while. The piece around Rt 3 and I-93 up north might be a little rough-- several road bridges and a lot of trucks.

I know your inquiry is about 128. There are some areas of road work around Rt 2, 3, and I-93. I don't know what's farther north. But the real reason I would stick with 495 is simply that 128 is such a crap shoot. Many long stretches all the way around will jam at rush hour- long rush hour, like 5-9AM and again about 3:30 to maybe 7PM. And certain stretches are liable to jam up at lunch time, or just at random times for seemingly minor reasons, or for construction. It's 36 miles down 128 from 95 in Peabody to 95 in Canton, and it's possible to be crawling for 15 of those if you catch the wrong time.
If I were coming down from Maine to Rhode Island, there's no question in my mind I'd take 495.

Thanks. Yes, the reason for asking was the 3/93 construction was pretty tough and backed up. Next trip will be after Labor Day and mid-week so maybe it will be better.

Actually, I may be heading up to Haverhill next week so I'll check it out.

I just took 295 to 495 to 95 to go to Maine and back and the road was fine, lots of traffic but the road was in good shape.

Only real bad area is in Haverhill/Lawrence area. The bridges over the Merrimac River just complete patchwork. A patch fell out a few weeks ago closing several lanes. Rt 95/128 is has far more traffic and much more likely to have stop and go. There ae also several areas of traffia too.

Wonder if that is when I came through there as it was a mess and a lot of stop and go traffic/lane merges.

It's always like that in that area for about 2 miles, the exits to get off 495 are kind of confusing to many and cause congestion, I've never had real issues just a minor slow down. Of course, if you're on that road Friday afternoon headed toward New Hampshire or Sunday afternoon headed back toward route 90 you had better bring your lunch, the rest of the week is fine and except for the 2 miles of roadway on the bridge the road is in good shape.
