Ken, we took a similar trip one year ago this week. We went up I-77 to US-19 in WVA, then I-79 up through Pittsburg to lake Erie. We wanted to go a little farther west to see all of Western and Northern NY. We then went over to Vermont and came back home on Route 9 past Lake George NY (BEAUTIFUL!) then picked up I-87 to Albany, I-88 from Albany to Binghampton, and I-81 through the Shanandoah Valley, back to I-77 home. The whole trip home was very pretty with the farms, leaves, mountains. Very nice drive this time of year. We have some pictures on our web site...click on the link in the signature below.
As far as campgrounds go, we stayed in VT for a week near Stowe at a place called Gold Brook Campground. Quiet place, no frills, very scenic. On the way back we overnighted in a couple of parking lots, then stayed a night or two in a KOA near Harrisonburg VA. Quiet place way back off the road. If you are through that area, by all means please stop for a dinner at the Blue Stone Inn. Its one of those places you just don't find anymore in the world of chain restaurants. It has been there since the 1920s and hasn't changed much.. except for the prices.
Have fun!!!
