Need information on a good scenic route with accessible campgrounds from Columbia, S.C. to northeast to view fall colors. We have Class A motor home 32 feet.

Southwindkin, ask this on the north east region also. I did that when needing to go to CT in march, a lot of folks gave me wonderful information.

Ken, we took a similar trip one year ago this week. We went up I-77 to US-19 in WVA, then I-79 up through Pittsburg to lake Erie. We wanted to go a little farther west to see all of Western and Northern NY. We then went over to Vermont and came back home on Route 9 past Lake George NY (BEAUTIFUL!) then picked up I-87 to Albany, I-88 from Albany to Binghampton, and I-81 through the Shanandoah Valley, back to I-77 home. The whole trip home was very pretty with the farms, leaves, mountains. Very nice drive this time of year. We have some pictures on our web site...click on the link in the signature below.

As far as campgrounds go, we stayed in VT for a week near Stowe at a place called Gold Brook Campground. Quiet place, no frills, very scenic. On the way back we overnighted in a couple of parking lots, then stayed a night or two in a KOA near Harrisonburg VA. Quiet place way back off the road. If you are through that area, by all means please stop for a dinner at the Blue Stone Inn. Its one of those places you just don't find anymore in the world of chain restaurants. It has been there since the 1920s and hasn't changed much.. except for the prices.

Have fun!!!

Hopefully you are already on the road. I live in New Jersey and from what I am looking at outside it looks like we will hit peak color next week. We spent last weekend in Mystic CT and they did not hit peak yet. The roads were packed with RVs I assume all taking Fall color tours. I-84 is a good road to take in the colors in CT but you may be past peak right now in the northern part of the state. I agree with the previous post I-87 is a very senic road in NY for colors. We stayed at Lake George Escape this summer and I would go back. I-87 has lots of campgrounds from just north of the city all the way to Lake George. I would recommend not going to far north of Newburgh NY and then turning south to stay with the peak colors. There is nothing like the Fall colors in the Northeast have fun.
