Will be touring Shenandoah Valley/West VA this summer. Have a 400DP. Maps indicate Winchester to Elkins pass over some very mountainous area. A book I have of mountainous routes on the East Coast indicates best to avoid some of these highways. A campground owner in Winchester recommended I avoid Route 50. I guess the easiest route would be I68 west Morgantown, I79 to Weston, WV and US33 to Elkins. However this is definitely the long route to get there. Anybody know this area and have a doable, shorter route? Thanks!

Looking at it reminds me of the old line "you can't get there from here". You have eastern mountains to cross no matter what you do. I would probably bite the bullet and go 33 from Elkins to Harrisonburg just to cut the hill milage short. Once you are in the valley I recall it is fairly flat. The issue would be clearances. Any way you slice it you will be dealing with hills and probably 2 lane looking at the map. The longest - west on Rt 33 to I-79 to I-68 to I-81 would probably have the easiest grades but be way longer.

Thanks for the link, think I will order one. The other map I am looking for is one that shows bridge heights and propane prohibited bridges and tunnels. I see Allstays shows bridge heights but not sure if that is the best source. I've found nothing on tunnels and propane. I know the Baltimore tunnel won't allow propane. Any ideas?

I just picked up the RM Motor Carrier atlas at Flying J. It has the laminated pages and shows commercial routes, bridge restrictions, tunnels etc. it was marked $79.00 but on sale at $29.00 with another $10.00 rebate so $19.95. It's late in the year I guess but it gives me more info than I had.

We've taken 50 all the way from Parkersburg to Grafton in the coach towing a Jeep, on our way to stay in Elkins. . 50 between Parkersburg & Clarksburg is just fine, 4-lane highway with some hills. It's 2-lane between Clarksburg & Grafton & can get narrow at times, but it's doable. You're highway route would be just fine, though.

Last summer we spent a great vacation near Seneca Rocks, WV. We ran from Harrisonburg, VA to Seneca Rocks and on to Elkins on US Rt 33. There were some steep hills and some switchbacks, but nothing your 400HP rig would have problems with as long as you're not trying to set any land speed records. We just loved the area and toured a number of caves in the area, the Seneca Rocks was a training area for the US troops who scaled the Normandy cliffs and some of the rough areas in Sicily. Some great steam RR rides and the Green Bank Radio Telescope.
