If I were making the trip, I would go the same way - swinging west to avoid the big eastern cities. Asheville is becoming a tourist destination city with more to see than just Biltmore and it has many good restaurants. I would spend a few days there and go to the Grove Park Inn for lunch or just to see the place, drive a piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway, maybe drive up to Waynesville and/or Cherokee (gets you into the mountains). I think Savannah and Charleston are both must sees and we enjoyed them both.

Route help requested

Do NOT miss Gettysburg! Go North on I81 to I84 stop in Promised land State Park. That route avoids Washington DC, Baltimore, and most Importantly NYC!
