Route: IL to Calgary

Planning a trip from central IL to the Calgary Stampede. What is the best route for a big rig? Want to avoid steep grades.

We began at Indianapolis, IN, but from Davenport, IA the route would be the same from up-state IL I think. (truck and 5er) This is the route we drove. The state highways in MT between I94 and US 2 were pretty desolate, have a full fuel tank before leaving I 94. I don't remember any difficulty with grades. Be prepared to encounter some severe road work in Calgary, they only have about 90 days of working weather. Don't know how one would check for that before getting there. We never did drive to the Stampede grounds, the RV park provided a shuttle for a modest fee. Worked out really well. By all means stay for the after-rodeo show. Both of thought is was better than the actual rodeo.

Unless you are traveling West from Calgary, you will have no steep grades to be concerned with. Once you head West from Calgary you are into the Rocky Mountains. Them is some big rocks.

P/S, don't forget to bring your Cowboy Duds for the Stampede. Everyone in The city of Calgary is a Cowboy for 10 days of the Stampede. Most of all, have fun!!!

surgical?

Is this a "surgical" trip to Calgary ... or a "meandering / stop and see stuff along the way" trip?

In other words are you ONLY interested in getting to Calgary ... or do you plan to visit interesting sites along the way?

Major flooding in Calgary today and still raining , many highways in southern Alberta closed . Calgary Mayor said when asked about the Stampede, " We will make it happen " . Might not be the year to spend a lot of time and money to go to the Stampede. Check Calgary's web page for info before you travel. Clean up after this mess is not going to happen overnight, currently 75,000 evacuated in Calgary, 100,000+ in other area of southern Alberta.

X2. It's looking real bad, and for now getting worse.

Provided the 160mm ( that's 6" for our American friends) of rain forecast ( Okotoks, Canmore areas ) in the next 48 hours doesn't happen, and bring any further damage. Keeping our fingers crossed for friends , family and everyone else in the area.
I do hope the worst is over, and that the Stampede goes ahead, but the pictures I've seen today are heartbreaking.
Best of Luck, Calgary and all of southern Alberta.

Don't ever discount the power of Albertans. When the Stampede Parade begins, the show will be ready to go.

As a Stampede volunteer myself and a wonderful team of people behind this fabulous organization will get this show ready. It may not be the same as previous years but will be additionally special for that same reason.

Right now the stampede grounds are completely under water including water in all buildings and the saddle dome up to the 10th seating level, but knowing Calgary as I do as an Albertan I will go as far as to say they will be ready for the Stampede. So all fingers and toes are crossed.
