Route Kelowna , BC to Yuma, AZ in January

Hi, we are planning our first Snowbird run to Yuma in early January. Looking for advice on best route and recommended stops. Thanks in advance.

We live in Oliver BC and travel to Yuma early November.

We’ll take 97 south and cross the border at Osoyoos.

Stay on 97 until WA 17 and continue south until 395. Follow 395 through Kennewick WA and get on I82 E until I84 E.

Then we travel on I 84 East through Pendleton OR, Boise ID until Twin Falls ID. Take US 93 south from Twin Falls ID through Jackpot NV, then Wells NV all the way until you hit I15 just north of Las Vegas.

Through Vegas and then we we take 95 south all the way to Yuma.

Some people will use our route south, and some prefer to stay on I 84 through Salt Lake City and stay on the Interstate all the way to Las Vegas then south to Yuma.

I prefer the route on 93 through Jackpot as it’s a little shorter.

In January, weather can also dictate your route south.

We take the exact same route down to Yuma. We’ve been doing it for more than 8 years. We used to use I15 but we now like to avoid the interstates.
Only once have we hit any amount of snow and that was at Cabbage Hill Pendleton. Chains were mandatory so we waited it out for 3 days at the Wild Horse Casino and watched the road cameras until the road was bare. It was no hardship!
Road cameras are really useful.

The only other piece of advice is to try to make your night stop at Jackpot NV then push through to Vegas. Often it is well below freezing mid Nevada at Wells and Ely so you run the risk of freezing pipes unless you’re well prepared.
We stop at Cactus Pete’s then the next night at the bottom of 93 before it hits I15.

Curious where you stay on 93 just before I15? We usually stay in Wells and the next night in Alamo at Picketts RV park.

You’re right about it being cold in Wells and Ely. When we stay in Wells I don’t hook up to water, and use a small heater in my wet bay.

We have always spent the overnight at the Loves travel centre at the bottom of 93. The road that runs just outside the gas station has good overnight parking space and just backs on to the desert so you could park anywhere.
In recent years they had done a lot of development including a large RV/boat storage facility so the desert area is not easily accessible now but still good parking on the road.
It’s normally warm enough there that heat is not required so dry camping is perfect
