Route recommendations - Annapolis to Dallas

Hi. I was looking for route advice and any interesting stops on a trip from Annapolis to Dallas. Using Google, I was going to take 66 to I-81 in Virginia, then go across Tennessee and Arkansas on 40 and 30 into Dallas. The other routes are more mileage but we want a safe and scenic ride so I think this is the one. Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks,
mike

Hello Mike.

As a fellow Marylander, welcome to this site.

I have driven this city pair many times over the years and have driven the route you list many times. Out of boredom with that route, I looked for something different.
Here is what I came up with.
I-70W out of Baltimore (I-97N out of Annapolis, I-695 Baltimore to I-70)
I-81S at Hagerstown
I-64W thru WV into Kentucky
I-44W/S to Oklahoma City
and finish with I-35 into Dallas.

The route is smooth, roads are in good condition and driving thru WV and Kentucky is some very pretty scenery. Best of all, there is not much difference in time or miles with the route I listed...slightly more but well worth it if you are traveling casually.

Take care.

Hello Mike J, welcome to the forum.

I don't know the size of your rig, but check US highways when you travel. You won't see towns named Possum Trot, Monkey's Eyebrow, Bird-in-Hand, Intercourse, Hunker, Big Otter, etc. on the Interstates.

I find these highways generally in good shape, less traffic, more scenic. Distances travelled each day are not much less than staying on the interstates. Just check ahead for any low bridges and watch overhangs at fuel stops. I do use interstates around large cities and pick up my highway on the far side.

Enjoy your trip.
