Route Suggestions, Iowa to Buffalo, WY

We will leave the Des Moines area tomorrow and are heading west. We plan to stay in Buffalo, WY for a few days. Our possible routes are to take I29 up to I90 or to head across Nebraska on I80. We've driving the I90 route before but never I80 thru NE. The only thing we had planned to see if we took the NE route was the arch/museum in Kearney.

Looking for others' suggestions/vote on which route to take.

Route Suggestions, Iowa to Buffalo, WY

Perhaps you're already on the road, but I'd suggest the I-80 route, simply because it will be a new experience. I've driven both, and I prefer I-90, but you should go for the experience! That stretch from Lincoln to Grand Island is a sleeper.

If you're on I-90 and you haven't done so before, stop in Mitchell, SD, and see the Corn Palace. Mitchell is a very nice little town, and the Corn Palace is kitschy but cool!

Nothing to see on the I-80 route except Cabelas and the big statue of the Virgin Mary right before the WY border.

On I-90 you can at least stop at all the attractions in western SD. I thought the Corn Palace was depressing because downtown Mitchell seems to be a future ghost town.

A lot of those small towns will very slowly die, or perhaps just shrink, unless they are commercially central, because its easy and interesting for the kids to go elsewhere. An inevitable evolution.

200 years ago most folks would live their entire 60 - 70 year life within a ten mile radius. This morning I drove ten miles for breakfast. As Walter said, "That's the way it is....".

Not sure where your at by now --pioneer auto museum in Murdo, SD. you will see the signs along I-90. It is right near an exit and the is a RV park one block west of it.

There is a 50ty dinner there and any kind of early American antiques one might want to see. Cars, toys, cycles, He has a early American town set up also. Bank, post office, train station. It was worth the stop for us??

Also take the loop thru BAD lands NP. It's 26 mile loop I think and you will come out in Wall SD. Stay in RV park in Wall and visit Wall Drug Store. Enjoy your trip

Thanks for the suggestions.

We did take I29 from Des Moines. Got to Sioux City and I29 was closed due to flooding. We were detoured to 75 North to Luverne, MN. We are in Mitchell, SD now and plan to stay one night on the river in Chamberlain. DW wants to visit Wall Drug (we were there several years ago). We will continue West as we head to Junction City, OR for a service appointment on July 14. We want to stop in Buffalo and Cody, WY. We may come back thru this area on our return trip after we see more of Oregon and Washington.
