Not recent, but we drove from Tok to Chicken to Dawson City via Top-of-the-World highway last year. The American end of the highway is all gravel, narrow most of the way, and depending on when the road is graded it is either full of pot-holes or mostly smooth_and that depends on the amount of rain and your timing. We drove the "highway" just to say we did, I would never do it again.
The paved highway South from Dawson City is comparable to some state highways in the lower 48. Use printed road maps, DO NOT depend on a GPS for directions here.
We had an 7 year old 5er then, if we had a new MH I would not attempt to go through Chicken, the road is simply too bad/rough. While we were there we saw 2 motorhomes that had gone over the side of the mountain_ frightening sight, although everyone survived.
If you decide to go this route, keep in mind the shoulders are verrry soft and deep. If you get a steer wheel into the berm, you will go over the side.

I just was in Dawson City about a month ago. It had been raining for about 2 days and I got all kind road condition reports. I went to the ferry and watched everyone getting off covered in mud. So with much thought and hating to back track 300+miles back to Whitehorse that's what I did. After talking with many who had gone over it they really didn't pin point what is so different and worth the hassle. I had a long trip still ahead of me and didn't feel it was worth the risk and hassle of trying to wash all that mud from underneath my MH. It cost me $170 in gas but that was my only damage. My life will be ok not ever seeing/driving Top of the World highway.

Have driven the highway a few times over the years. I can confirm that the Canadian side of the Top of the World Hwy is much better than the US side. As for the "is it a must do?" Probably not. It's main benefit is that it saves you having to drive a long way back to Whitehorse if you are planning on heading on up the road to Fairbanks. Chicken isn't that wonderful and a border crossing is a border crossing. Last time I drove it (few years back), I ended up stopping to help out a group of seniors who had gotten a flat and didn't have the strength to loosen the lug nuts to change the tire. They really would have been in a bad way as it was starting to get late and traffic was very sparse. There isn't that much worth the worry if the current conditions are not good.

The road from Whitehorse to Dawson City was about the same as Whitehorse to Tok, not bad generally. In the Yukon this year the further north we traveled the rougher they got and we thought holy cow what is the road to Fairbanks going to like? We crossed the border and instantly the roads were much better. I'll say this its very doable just always keep you eyes peeled and be ready to slow down to a near stop. With the patches being new black and shadows sometimes its hard to read to road so don't drive any faster than you can quickly slow down. It's worth all hassles to see it all !
