routing options:
looking for your suggestions on the best routing options for driving from Petaluma CA to Bakersfield CA
will likely be doing this drive on December 30th (if the day of the week factors into routing options)

appreciate the suggestions

AND if you have a "favourite" rv park for Bakersfield, we'd like to know that too!
(looking at rvparkreviews, there seems to be a good choice of parks in Bakersfield)

thanks everyone
(and happy holidays)
regards, pdq

Not a lot of options. I-80 out of SF then I-5 and 58 or 99. I have not been on 99 but from the reports I have seen it is pretty rough. 1 south would be nerve wracking this time of year.

I prefer the 99 route myself. From Petaluma I would take 101 to 37, 37 t0 80 in Vallejo, 780 to Benecia, 680 across the bridge (free direction) to 580 in Pleasonton 580 to 205, 205 to 5 North for 2 miles, 120 to Manteca then 99, 99 to 58 in Bakersfield, 58 to Edison Road and the Orange Grove RV Park.

The Orange Grove allows you to pick Oranges from the trees within the park and they are wonderful. We are usually there the first week in Jan. pick fruit and head to So Cal. We will be a month later this year.

Good advice on the routes and I'll second the vote for Orange Grove RV Park. We always stay there as our overnight spot. We stayed there this past Sunday and will be staying there again next Sunday on our way home. Nice folks, easy access and free doughnuts and coffee.

From Petaluma I take 101 to 116 (Lakeville Hwy) 116 to 37, 37 to 80 in Vallejo, 780 to Benecia, 680 across the bridge (free direction) to 580 in Pleasanton 580 to 205, 205 to 5 North for 2 miles, 120 to Manteca then 99, 99 to Bakersfield.

Orange Grove RV Park is nice but we prefer the Http://bakersfieldrvresort.com/ on Wible Rd.

And if you are really lazy, they will deliver dinner right to your door.

From their site:
"Restaurant - Stop by The Crest Bar & Grill and relax with your favorite beverage or slow down & enjoy a casual dinner with one of our chef's special creations. Patio fireside dining, Coach service available (room svc)."

Our daughter lives in Petaluma and done about all of the suggested routes, and then some on her way down to O.C. The last time she took the 101 to the 580 to I-5 and had her fastest time so far.
The route I like to take though not the fastest, is 101 to 116 to 37 to 80 to the 12 to I-5. The 12 is 2 lanes through the back county, a little more scenic than on the highway. I cuts out a few miles of driving that you would have if you continued on 80 to I-5.
I personally try to go a route with the less number of freeway changes.

I drive from Novato to the Orange Grove several times every year. My preferred route is 101 to the Richmond Bridge (580 free direction), 580 to 5, 5 to 46, 46 to 99, 99 to 58E to Edison Rd.

I would not suggest using 58 west of Bakersfield. Lots of stop lights and traffic.
