Routing to Glacier National Park

Looking at a trip to Glacier next summer and Garmin Base camp software is routing me from Milwaukee along I94, up to hwy 2 into East Glacier and then across the park on Hwy 2 into West Glacier. I've been advised not to travel through the park by RV (40 ft mh towing). Anyone with experience traveling that way that can share their experience?

US 2 runs along the bottom of Glacier, not through it. You will be fine!

There is nothing wrong with US 2 from East Glacier to West Glacier or any of the other park hard surfaced roads with your rig. But you won't be able to take it on the Going to the Sun Road that cuts through the park. Take the bus ride! Otherwise the driver will not enjoy the trip as he/she will be concentrating 100% on driving!

You might also want to consider taking 2 all the way across ND and Montana. Not much for traffic, nice scenery, many sections of 4 lane and Super 2.

More advice if you are going to Yellowstone also, go there first. Glacier first in my opinion and many others I have talked to ruins the Yellowstone experience. It would be like having a cup of great coffe after a double shot expression. And if going to Yellowstone don't forget Bridger Tetons.

It's a pleasant drive across the whole way on Hwy 2. You won't be driving through Glacier. The highway doesn't go through it.

Thanks for the info. The mapping software made it look like it was in the park but I see Hwy 2 is the southern edge.

Took hwy 2 last Summer from St. Ignace Michigan to Montana. Four lane from just West of Duluth Minnesota to Mt. border, nice drive.

Be aware that the short season (sometimes only 2 months) makes advance reservations a must. I went there in 2011 and The Road to the Sun was not opened until July 15 due to heavy snow removal. It was then closed about Sept. 20 for needed maintenance before the Fall snow arrived.

Whether you take I-94 or US 2, save a day for Teddy Roosevelt National Park in western ND.

Hi Craigls2,
Consider not going to West Glacier at all. Stay on the East side of Glacier National Park. There is a KOA at St. Mary. It is about a mile from the Going to The Sun Road east entrance. However, the best part about staying on the east side is the KOA is near the trail head for all the east side trails. Grinnell Glacier, Iceberg Lake, + all the other exciting trail heads. The KOA is at St Mary, Montana Campground | St. Mary / East Glacier KOA

Lastly, every Wednesday night there is a native American demonstration of the various dances. There is also a narration or each dance.

Thanks Gary, always good to get opposing views. Is it all about trail access or are there other objections to west glacier?

Hi,
Stayed on the west side many years ago. Way too commercialized and too far from the east side trails. Any place with a Walmart is bound to bring too many people. I can tolerate Going To The Sun Road once, maybe twice in a 2 week stay. Each time it is a full day. I like the east side trails much better than the west side trails.
