Staying in the USA , will save $$$ on fuel .
Although the Canadian $ is low at the moment, even with the exchange you'll get more fuel for you dollar in the states.
I hate to say it but some of the smaller border crossings , like the one on 213/62 on the Canadian side , may have nothing better to do than search your coach . JMHO; The I-15 Crossing may be less of a hassle.
The 501 on the Alberta side , doesn't look coach friendly .
Were you planing on visiting Waterton Lakes NP in Canada?

Why do you say the 501 doesn't look good?
As far as the lakes haven't thought about that area

Sections of the 501 towards the AB/ Sask border are listed on my map as gravel so I'd consider any section questionable for a coach.
I have friends in AB , I'll check for local knowledge; as my map of the area suggests . I do know that roads in Northern AB; with the same marking on the map; I consider pick-up truck only .

If you cross at Portal/North Portal you can head up to Moose Jaw to catch the Trans Canada (Hwy 1). Paved all of the way.
We have crossed numerous times at Portal. Never any hassle. Generally short lines. We recently crossed at Coutts and the line up was over an hour long.
Hwy 1 will take you straight to Calgary and then on to Banff.

Coutts/Sweetgrass are the same location. Coutts is the Canadian side, Sweetgrass the US.

I'll have to eat a little crow here .
Alberta highway 501 , is way better than you'd expect from checking in a Rand McNally atlas . Google street view , shows ( at least the number of miles I went through , from #2 west ) a narrow two lane road , mostly through wheat fields.
Downsides are , very narrow shoulder , no pull offs ( except farm access driveways) and from satellite photos , no services.

Hwy 501 is a secondary highway. Secondary highway standards are lower than a provincial highway as they provide more local access. Depending upon location and traffic counts they may have a gravel or seal coat surface.
