Hi..Will be going N/B from Raleigh,NC to Bourne,MA in May.I thought I would take the 301 to the NJ and Garden State Parkways. Most of the posts about this route appear to be outdated. Is this still the best way around the DC/Baltimore area. Thanks. I really need your help on this one.Len

We use this route frequently and consider it a very pleasant ride, we also use the Cape May Lewes ferry and pick up the beginning of the Garden State Pkwy....

Methinks I-95 to Fredericksburg, US 17/I-66 to I-81 and then I-84 might be a better way to avoid all the big metro areas.

I can truly say that I HATE the GWB and the Cross Bronx going through NY. The traffic is ridiculous, the drivers are beyond rude and the roads are a disaster!
We always take 287 and loop around to the Tappan Zee Bridge. It adds about 40 miles to the ride, but the peace of mind is worth it for me. You can stay on the Garden State and it will take you to the Tappan Zee Bridge also, but it has a lot of tolls. After the bridge you will pick up 95 North in Rye,NY then its an easy ride to Bourne. Just watch the time of day, between 4-6 can be busy going north bound .
Where in Bourne are you staying?

CollenP...Thanks for the input. The Tappan Zee Bridge makes sense, and looks to be the better way. We are park attendents at the ACE Midway Rec Area on RT 6., between Bourne and Sandwich.

We've sailed up 95 via the NJT and GSP when traveling late at night, but have experienced a nightmare of traffic during the day. The truck stops/rest areas aren't too special either. Not to mention gas runs about 50cents more at the gas stations on the Turnpike.

The Cape May Ferry seemed very expensive for RV's the last time we looked, but it's been a while.

Our favorite route is out of the way, but pleasant (except for bumpy PA Turnpike) is up to Wilkes-Barre, then Eastward on I-64? I must admit I don't really remember the towns/road numbers.
