Rutland VT to RT 40 west

Looking for best route from Rutland VT to route 40 west (going to AZ)without using New York Thruway 90 (really bad shape) or going close to NYC or NJ

Thanks in advance

As far as interstates go, I-88 from the Albany area down to Binghampton, then I-81 all the way down to Knoxville where you can pick up I-40. Keeps you well west of NYC, north Jersey, the Philly area and pretty much all of Megalopolis. I haven't done it in 30 years, but the I-81 trip down the western spine of Virginia is a nice ride.

Thanks for the reply, that's about the only way I could see. I know a lot of truck traffic uses 81 instead of 95 anymore, I haven't been on 81 for about as long as you. Wife's doing the trip by herself in a class C, anyone know the condition of 81 ?
Thanks again
Steve
