WOW, never heard of that before as we went right through there on our way from DFW, Texas to Hilton Head SC !!!!
Even made a wrong turn and got in Friday rush hour traffic on two and four lanes side streets - stop light to stop light was FUN
At the time we had a Ford Platinum 350 pulling a 39 foot Redwood 5er...

Straight through might get you into an 8-lane FUBAR with no way out. Take 285W and limit your risk to 4 lanes with exits on a regular basis.
Don't do ATL from 10-7 unless you absolutely have to.

If you can hit it after 10 am and before 3pm go straight thru. I never take 285 regardless what I'm driving.

Go straight through between 10am and 3pm, except on Fridays, that is get the hell out of dodge day and there IS no good time of day except maybe after 10pm. Take the 2nd or 3rd lane from the right and you should be OK, take your time and it should be alright. The restriction is for commercial trucks not making deliveries in the city. If you want to go around then take I-285 to the west, signs will say to Birmingham. On I-285 I would pick the 3rd from the right lane (big rigs are restricted to the 2 right lanes on any highway over 2 lanes wide in Georgia) until you go through the airport tunnel then you want to be in the 2nd from the right. The exit to I-75 is 2 lanes wide (sharp curve) but then goes to one lane after you make the turn and the right lane ends (merging traffic from the left) then back to 2 lanes and just before you get to I-75 it is back to one lane with the right lane ending again. In other words after you make the turn from I-285 to get on I-75 you want keep moving to the left lane on the ramp. If in doubt just follow a big rig. Lane changes can't be avoided just be careful.

Hi gibby72,
Go straight through. Do not take the beltway. The restriction mentioned in your post is for commercial vehicles. Straight through is the only way I go.

We've gone through Atlanta several times and it's just like other large cities. As said above try to pick a time the during non commute hours. And be patient with the other drivers. Just my opinion.

I don't like driving at night light I used to in the good old days. Much better to drive in daylight hours and be settled for and over night stop before 4 PM so I'd suggest the mid day hours. That's just my preference.
