We're going to Santa Cruz soon approaching from the South on the I-5. I know from the past experience that state route 152 from the 5 to Gilroy on the 101 is OK but from Gilroy to the 1 it looks like the 152 has more twists than a barrel of snakes. It may be not as bad as it looks on the map but if it is, I'd rather detour than listen to the DW freak as we trim overhanging trees or play chicken with oncoming traffic in the tight corners

Is it worthwhile to go South to the 129 to cross over or go all the way North to the 85 and come back South? Is there some other way that doesn't show on the map as a major road?

We're traveling in a class A with no toad.

152 is twisty, 129 has a short section of twisty and both are 2 lane. I think the best route to Santa Cruz is I-5 S to I-505 S to I-80 W to 680 S to I-880 S to CA-17 S a little twisty but all 4 lane road. This will bypass Sacremento and most of the Bay Area traffic.

Your route is undoubtedly the easiest drive but we don't want to go so far out of our way just to avoid some ordinary two lane. Twisty, mountainy, motion sickness kind of two lane is worth a detour however.

I'm thinking now, the I-5 to the 152 to the 156 to the 101 to the 129 to the 1.

Or maybe we'll just cross over to the 101 way back at the 46 (Paso Robies). That's what my Magellan wants us to do.

Sorry should have read your post better. Thought you were going south on I-5, yes your route is the best. CA46 is a good road probably better than 152 Again sorry for my oversite.

152 is an OK road to Gilroy but west of Gilroy (as I remember) it has a 30' overall length restriction. Also your discription of it is quite accurate.

Well, we wimped out and took the 46 to Paso
Robles. Boring drive but safe considering the high winds at the time. The 101 North from Paso Robles is almost like an Interstate and an easy drive. Crossing over from the 101 to the PCH through Artichoke country was kind of testy but brief. The PCH to Santa Cruz is OK but once off the PCH, Santa Cruz is an old city with very narrow streets. Once you've got the layout, its OK though.
