Sacramento CA to Yellowstone/Tetons

There is a sign at the big inning of the Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon that states "Down is optional, Up is mandatory". We find that that caution is useful in many places.

My $.02 worth. We go on a non RV vacation to Montana every summer in August. Two summers ago we vacationed near Ennis Montana. made a day trip into YNP. Was it beautiful? Yes. Did we get to see everything we wanted? No. Will we ever go back? Probably not. It was the most crowded traffic jammed place i have ever been considering it is the last place you ever want to see traffic. Seemed like hundreds of busses, motorhomes and RVs along with thousands of cars. People braking hard to a complete stop in the middle of the roads (where signs say not to do so) to stop, get out of their car to look at an Elk a 1/4 mile away. Not to mention i truly believe us speaking english were the minority. Rude and pushy Euros and Asians were awful. Take it as you want but all this added up to not a very enjoyable trip to YNP. I really think they need to limit daily visitor numbers by a lot.

I would highly recommend you visit in early June or late August or sept when the crowds die down.

First, I would definitely not drive 250 miles round trip for a day trip to Yellowstone. No, you will not see everything your want in a few hours. Folks will spend a whole week there and come back time after time to see more.

We find it's best to stay IN the park, pack a lunch and head out early morning to zero in on one direction only. You won't have the crowds in the morning and you'll see lots more animals. The next day we'd take off in another direction. Also, there are absolutely gorgeous areas that most tourists never go...seek them out. Talk to the rangers. Sometimes we'd leisurely stay around camp in the morning when everyone is out - very quiet time. Then we might take a hike in the afternoon, have an early dinner and go out in the late afternoon/early evening to spot more critters or walk the geyser trails. That's when folks will be returning to camp and it's not crowded at all.

A day trip into Yellowstone? No way.

Stayed at Fishing Bridge Campground in late May/ early June for a week. It was a great location to explore the park and that early in the year there was still snow on the ground. Power was appreciated! The sites are really tight getting into and you need to make a reservation if you can fit. The park website will list the opening date of each road but a major storm can effect any of the roads. 45mph is really enforced in the park and traffic can be an issue at times but it's usually because of animals wondering on the road. Shot some great pictures of Bison, bears and wolves through the window within 20 feet...
We went out the eastern side to Cody which has some interesting things to explore. Nice dinosaur museum as well! We eventually went to Jackson and the Grand Tetons.

Much slower, maybe more difficult. But oh the drive!!!!
