Sacramento to Monterey Bay

We are taking the grandkids to Monterey Bay next week, staying at the Monterey Bay/Santa Cruz KOA. Is there an easy road into that area once you get off the 880 or 101?

Hell ChileRick,

Depending on your rig size, you may want to stay on 101 and take RT156 cross over to HW1. 156 will put South of the KOA campsite and North Monterey. There are very few small hills and traffic is much less that 17.

Yes. Take 101 south past Gilroy to 129-Chittenden Pass, Riverside Drive towards Watsonville. Follow Riverside Drive (129) thru Watsonville and go under Highway 1. Take a right at the gas station and go about 1/4 mile on Lee Road and take a left on West Beach Street. Follow it west to San Andreas Road. Turn right on San Andreas and that will take you to the KOA, about 4.25 miles. KOA will be on your right.

If you have any interest in avoiding Bay Area traffic (presumably 680 to 101), consider taking I5 south from Sacramento to 152, then 152 to 156 to either 101 or 1. The distance from Sacramento to Monterey is the almost exactly the same, whether you take 80 to 680 to 101, or 5 to 152/156 to 101, without the risk of a multi-mile Bay Area parking lot (could happen anywhere, but especially starting about Mission Blvd on 680 until past Gilroy). I have used both, but only take the 680 route through the Bay Area if I am travelling very early on a holiday or weekend.

Thanks so much for the recommendations. Our "RV trip Wizard" routed us down the 17 and that didn't look like a good option. I think we'll take the 5 to the 152 to the 101 and then the 129 across. Thanks again for everyone's help.
