Salt Lake City Bypass

Plan on traveling north from AZ and going on I 15, was hoping there is a viable bypass route around SLC where I can get off I15 south of SLC and then get back on again when I am north of SLC. Looking on Google maps I don’t see anything?

Traveled through Salt Lake many times. Pick an inside lane and go with the flow.

BTW, there is a really nice RV Park on the north end of the city if you're interested.

Made this trip in April. Spent the night just south of SLC. Left around 10 AM headed north and held 55-60 all the way through SLC.

You could take 215, but i don’t think you will save much time unless it is late afternoon.

I should add. When I pass through SLC, I stay at the KOA on West Temple. Then eat at the Red Iguana. It is worth the stop. I don’t like Pony Express RV Park. Too much noise and too many factories nearby.

Don't get tempted to use the High Occupancy Vehicle lanes while transiting SLC. Vehicles over 12,000 pounds and vehicles towing are not allowed in the left two lanes where HOV lanes are present, and not allowed in the left lane of any three or more lane highway anywhere in Utah. Oh, and our wonderful .05 dui law starts 1 Jan, so enjoy your O'Douls!

An enthusiastic X2 on Jake’s call for the KOA and particularly for the Red Iguana. Have eaten there several times. You won’t find better.
SLC uses a street naming convention that can be confusing to the unfamiliar. For this reason I will clarify what I’m sure was a simple typo on Jake’s part.
Both the KOA and the Red Iguana are located a few miles out of the downtown on West North Temple, not on West Temple. There IS a West Temple, but it is a totally different place. Also, there is now a second restaurant, the Red Iguana 2, which happens to be found on West South Temple. Same owners, probably equally delish, but I have never been there. It’s the West North Temple site that I recommend.

Depends on what you are calling the City.

I drive it at least twice a year, Via Spanish Fork. The traffic picks up there and can be heavy all the way to I 84. 125 miles. A lot more traffic than the Okanagan.

Early weekend mornings have proven to be the least busy. Avoid rush hours at all costs.

The Costco (1818 S 300 W), near exit 304 has diesel and is not a bad on and off when traffic is moderate.

Travel there on a regular basis. There are no major detours around the city I am aware of. Have tried the ring road 215 as well as the Parkway. Neither seem to be better than simply going through on 15. There are times to avoid but even then traffic seems to move along unless there is an accident.

I find the third lane is the one I prefer through the city. Travel is steady and we have not had many issues. Being patient helps.

There really aren’t any good ways to bypass I 15 through SLC. The Salt Lake City heavy traffic zone on I-15 pretty much runs from Spanish Fork in the south to Willard in the north, a distance of around 115 miles or so. Non rush hour traffic when there isn’t a lot of construction it generally takes me about 2.5 hours and you can generally drive 60 to 70 most of the time. During rush hour you can easily double the time, lot of complete stop and crawl to stop, zoom, stop.

If there has been an accident in the northern part of that congestion zone, I-15 to the legacy parkway reconnecting to I 15 in kaysville is often the better choice. I-215 tends to jam up a lot like I-15 but the legacy portion doesn’t unless there is a crash.

215 might feel less congested but i dont believe it saves any time. And to the Utah address comment, Utah is the easiest addresses to find as long as you know where the temple is and understand how it works.
